My brand new black cotton shirt got white wax down one arm, and it went into the wash before the wax was noticed! Help me please! Is there any way to salvage the shirt?

I've heard that covering the wax with a paper towel and then pressing a hot iron would lift the wax, but I'm afraid try it and set the wax in any further.
