Bathroom Stains
Toilet Stains
Ok, let's tackle the worst cleaning job first and be done with it! Always use a toilet brush with plastic bristles to avoid scratching the porcelin. Once the porcelin is damages, cleaning is a lost cause. An easy and inespensive way to remove stains is to scrub with two to three cups of white vinegar. If you really need to give it a good cleaning, flush the toiled and turn off the water - then add the vinegar, scrub and let it sit overnight. Scrubbing the bowl with borax is another way to clean the toilet effectively and without scratching. Bleach is also a great cleaner, but should not be combined with any other agent - just add about 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup to the water, let sit for a few minutes, gently scrub (don't splash!), and flush. If your toilet has that bothersome reddish ring - it is from too much iron in the water. Using a product like Iron Out or a rust remover according to the directions.
Once you have it all sparkling clean, consider using a product such as NeverScrub Refillable Self-Cleaning Toilet Kit, which will help to eliminate such tough scrubbing jobs in the future.
Shower Door Stains
Hard water stains on shower doors? There several successful methods to try depending on the severity of the stains. One of the best ways to avoid the build-up is to use a squeege before leaving the shower. Also, keep a spray bottle of vinegar and water near the shower to spray it down a few times a week. If you have very hard water, it will not hurt to use vinegar at full strength.
A great way to get rid of hard water stains, is to use glass/ceramic cooktop cleaner. If you have one of those smooth top ranges, you know what that is - no odor and works great. Pledge with orange oil sprayed on a dry shower door, then scrub with a teflon scrubber sponge, works well and smells great!
Mildew Stains
The best way to keep mildew away from your bathroom is to keep ahead of it. Try to remember every few months or so, to spray mildew prone areas of your bathroom with a solution of 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 water. Peroxide environmentally friendly and is easy on your lungs. Just be careful not to spray items that may stain (rugs, curtains, towels) since it does have that bleaching effect.
